A little history

The Iowa Lions Foundation started out as the Iowa Lions Sight Conservation Foundation at the Lions State Convention in Clear Lake in 1951. The charge given to the new foundation was “to study and make recommendations, especially to giving aid to Leader Dogs for the Blind foundation, aid in establishing of an eye bank in the State of Iowa and aid to the Blind, and sight Conservation in all fields to the end that the resources of the Lions of Iowa can be used to the greatest advantage. The Iowa Lions Eye Bank became a reality in September of 1955. The Foundation was incorporated as a non-profit organization

Over the years programs of purchasing typewriters for blind students, helping to expand the Iowa Commission for the Blind, using Iowa prison detainees to transcribe into Braille, a glaucoma testing vehicle, a Cochlear Implant Center, a Hearing Aid Bank and in 1999 Coming to Your Senses children’s vision screening which today is Iowa KidSight.

Our Foundation has undergone two name changes in its history. The name was changed to the Iowa Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation in 1981 and due to confusion with the Lions Clubs International Foundation when acronyms were used, the current name of the Iowa Lions Foundation was adopted in 1994. During the original discussions it was felt that if the Iowa Lions Foundation was not shortened to an acronym there would be less confusion with LCIF.

The original budget for the Iowa Lions Sight Conservation Foundation was $14,100. The 2011-2012 Iowa Lions Foundation budget is $345.220. Today the Iowa Lions Foundation supports seven entities: Iowa Lions Eye Bank; Iowa KidSight; Iowa Lions Hearing Aid Bank; Iowa Cochlear Implant Center; Iowa Commission for the Blind; Iowa School for the Deaf and the Leader Dog Puppy Program.
